Life Changes

Life Changes

A few years ago, if you would have asked me if I would have ever lived with either of my brothers past the age of 18, I would have laughed and vehemently opposed the idea.  I like clean house, socks in the hamper and would rather not have anyone play beer pong in my dining room; my youngest brother doesn’t mind a dirty house, uses a hamper as something to lay his clothes on, not put his clothes in, and enjoys hosting beer pong tournaments on a regular basis.

Well, a few years ago, change stared both of us in the face, and we decided to move in together.   I would be remiss not to say that he’s been the best roommate I’ve ever had, and incidentally become one of my best friends.

We’ve hosted: cackling girlfriends, 24 oz beer drinking friends, Cranium game nights, Christmas parties, movie nights, beer pong tournaments, and not one of these things were part of my life plan.  He listens to me rave about the crush in my life, AND listens to me talk gibberish for 30 minutes without taking a breath.  Bonus: he never tells me what I want to hear, but what I NEED to hear.  We have distinct personalities, and differing opinions on whether or not Oprah is the devil, but in the end we respect each other.

We are a normal brother and sister with disagreements about exactly how clean our 1 bathroom has to be, but we have challenged each other into growing, and have consequently grown closer together.

Veering off your assumed life path can be uncomfortable and even frightening.  Frankly, by 2010 I had planned to be married and have children. However, it’s 2011 and neither of those are anywhere in sight (unless you count Beau Jackson).  Does this mean I’ve failed?  No.  Todo en su momento. But in the mean time, I’ve gained so much more.

Every day you make decisions that could change your life path. Don’t waste your time and energy on the “what ifs.” What if I hadn’t decided to move, what if I hadn’t turned down that job, what if it doesn’t work out the way I planned? Be secure in your decision and welcome the change.

“There are opportunities to experience life in a new way, to learn and grow, to find out who you are and who you would really like to be and what you would like to do in this life.  Each path is strewn with opportunities despite the outcome." Feel the Fear, Jeffers.

(You’d have to ask Carlos if he feels the same.  I’ll bet you $1; he says it hasn’t been so bad.)
