Stepping out of my Comfort Zone

Stepping out of my Comfort Zone

Everyone falls somewhere on the Comfort zone spectrum.

0-Not curious at all: People who are content with where they are and what they know.  0’s have a sign posted on the door of life that reads, please do not disturb.  These folks love their comfort zone.

10-An acute sense of curiosity: People who have an insatiable curiosity; they need to move, travel, learn, and grow or else life as they know it would end. These folks want to step out of their comfort zone.

I both admire people who are resolute in their standing as 0’s and as 10’s, but my number is more like a 7.

What would life be like if I wasn’t so curious, if I didn’t want to push myself a little further and a little further?   Perhaps, I could live in the city I grew up in, get married, buy a house, go to football games on Friday nights, and never give a thought to the outside world. It’s a lovely existence, but I’m not suited for it.  I feel a stirring inside that makes me think that there is more out there for me to read, and experience, and understand.   I want to roam through a village in Brazil, eat food prepared by Jacques Pepin, and stand in East Africa and feel the Indian Ocean water on my toes. The clashing of my curious nature with indifference, in romantic relationships, has proven devastatingly difficult and paralyzing even.  I will never go back to that.

As Maya Angelou says, “When you know better, you do better.”  Additionally, and unavoidably, there have been a few people in my life who have been intimidated and uncomfortable by my curious nature and my willingness to inch out of my comfort zone; but mostly I have been met with encouragement and well wishes.

Where ever you fall on the Comfort Zone Spectrum, be sure to surround yourself with people who reinforce your best self.

When you stay authentic to who you really are, you are able to live everyday with purpose and joy.
