Why Write Anyway?

Why Write Anyway?

Some people ask me why I write.  Some people don’t understand why I would air my dirty laundry out there for the world to read about. I say, we all have dirty laundry and neither of ours is less dirty than the others. I am not concerned about being judged or regarded because the only chance I have on making a positive impact on people’s lives is if I speak my truth, the basic truths and harsh realities, as best I know how.

I write about truth however happy or sad because I have found, for me, once it’s on paper a few things start to happen. The first is, through the writing, I find some clarity. I begin to understand the situation a little better, the whys and whats of it all.

The second is significantly more fulfilling. I receive calls and text messages, and emails, most of them private, where kind folks say “thank you for admitting you too were going through a hard time, now I don’t feel so alone,” or “thank you for sharing your words, I needed to hear something like that today.” Some people even say “your honesty inspires me to be more open and honest with my family.” When someone takes the time to pass a sentiment like that along, it means the world to me. It makes me feel like I am making a difference, however small in people’s lives.

The moment I started writing and stopped suppressing who I was and what I wanted out of life was the moment my life changed. A few doors closed but many more doors opened. Each relationship became richer and more significant. I started attracting more of the people I wanted around, and less of the people I didn’t. And I want the same for each of you. “Nothing really beats being honest, honest about who you are and what you need. All the rest tends to work out.”

You only have one life, choose the things that bring you joy, however quirky or unpopular your choices may be. Choose to: write a blog and give up all the goods,  wear the leopard pants, get a tattoo of a panda climbing Texas on your shoulder, sing at the top of your lungs even if you’re in the key of Q, praise Jesus, flirt with the girl you’ve been eyeing, admit your sexuality, be comfortable in your own skin. Be honest about what brings you joy and veer towards that. Don’t be afraid to show the world who you really are. Suppressing your truth ends up changing who you are in the world.

I write honestly so that you can read my story and use me to further yours. It is my hope and intention that you use my peaks and my valleys to climb to the next level of your life. “Christianity is one beggar telling another beggar where to find the bread.” I am here to point you in the direction where I found the bread.
